Climate mitigation is a selfish act
In the past 30 years, there has been a climate top every year, with the intention to find solutions for both climate change and its consequences. Furthermore, a lot of climate activists, like Greta Thunberg for example, try to raise attention for the problem, because they perceive climate change as a problem. The sea level rises, which causes people to lose their houses and the weather is becoming more extreme which results in an increase in typhoons, floodings and food scarcity. The change in weather also affects biosystems all over the world and threatens the existence of different species. If the temperature keeps rising, many people and many animals will get displaced. Therefore there will be a lot of climate migration. What causes such drastic changes? The biggest contributors to climate change are greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane. The reason gases like these are present in the air is because of human activity, like burning fossil fuels. Because a lot of people want to make their lives more developed and “better”, they prioritize their short term self-interests over the ongoing environmental problems, and therefore, our species is the reason for climate change. Because global warming is happening so fast, the human species and other species don’t have time to adapt to the constantly changing circumstances. If it goes on like this the main cause for the extinction of the human will be the human itself.
You could state that human selfishness is to blame for global warming; we prefer our own comfort over the planet’s well-being. But isn’t the attempt to stop global warming in itself also selfish? Global warming is bad for humans, because it threatens a lot of, if not all, human lives, however, it will not lead to the vanishment of planet earth. A comparison could be made between rats and humans. If we have rats in our house, we would want to get rid of them, because they do unpleasant things, like biting on cables in the house and stealing food, and they do not have a single positive contribution to the living situation from the human perspective. We, humans, mess up the whole system on earth, not only by causing global warming, but also by regulating what is allowed to grow where and emptying the oceans so we can eat fish. We bring a lot of negative effects for the planet, moreover the system on earth does not experience any benefit from us being here, we are not useful for it in any way. Maybe humans are like a pest for the planet and, therefore, the planet is trying to kill us like we would try to kill rats.
Another comparison could be made between the human being and global warming, and the fever you get after you catch a virus. You could compare the human being with the virus. If the human body catches a virus, it raises its temperature to kill it, because a virus is a bad thing we don’t want in our body. Global warming in its turn can be compared with a fever. Right now, planet Earth is warming u,p which will eventually lead to the death of the disturber in the system, which is, in this case, not a virus, but us. The earth experiences only disadvantages as consequences of human behaviour; therefore, the attempt to stop climate change is selfish, because it is only for our own advantage.
Successful reproduction is the advantage we are trying to get by attempting to avoid climate change, because the biological reason why we exist is the need for reproduction. That is why humans don’t want their offspring to die, because that would defeat our purpose, it would go against our instinct. It would be better for the planet if the human species went extinct, but the way it is going now, people are trying to avoid climate change, for example, by holding summits like COP to try and find solutions. If the mitigation of global warming is a selfish thing to do, wouldn’t it be better not to? According to Thomas Hobbes, humans act with the object of self-interest, which means that the human is selfish. Therefore, even if it is a selfish act, it is okay to try and preserve a planet with humans on it. However, don’t give the well-being of the earth as the reason why you do it.
